PORTRAITS

I love making pictures of all kinds of people and their four-legged friends. I use all kinds of different equipment, too -- from modern whiz-bang digital cameras to classically clunky film cameras. You can order prints online or I can hand make one-of-a-kind pictures in my wet darkroom. Yep, I still have one. I love it in there, too. It's like a painter choosing a brush. He doesn't always use just the new one. He uses the one that works best for the subject at hand. So, I use the camera and the process that captures the mood and the slice of time best.

The one thing all my pictures have in common, whether they are digital, film, outside or in a studio is that they are of real people. I'm not into photographing uncomfortable-looking people wearing clothes they only put on when they get photographed. I go for pictures of kids who like to play in piles of leaves, of couples that love to hike together and of dogs that are obsessed with tennis balls.

With all that in mind, I offer three different portrait photography packages: Documentary Digital, Classic Film and Vintage 8X10.

Documentary Digital

This is the simplest and most versatile package. As the name suggests, it almost never happens in the studio. We go to a favorite park, your backyard or anywhere you prefer. We go for a walk; you do something fun with your kids or just hang out together. You'll look your best just being yourself and the kids will look great when they look like kids. Leave the bow ties at home. Afternoons are a great time to do this, when the light gets that golden look.

Shoots typically last a couple hours and when we're done you get your own, password protected, web gallery to see the pictures. There are usually about 100 images to choose from. You can then purchase prints in either color or black and white.

Packages start at $150 for shoots near Portland, Maine.

Classic Film

This is the package for those of you who appreciate old-time craftsmanship and things made by hand. If you like hand-written letters instead of email, or homemade cookies instead of store-bought, this is the package for you. Classic Film shoots can be done in my studio, at your home or outdoors.

I shoot these kinds of pictures with my trusty Hasselblad camera. It was made in Sweden and it's the same kind of camera astronauts took to the moon. In fact, they brought the film home and left the cameras there to reduce weight. So, there's a pile of Hasselblad cameras on the moon if you want one, too. But that's a different story.

Getting back to the pictures.

Hasselblad pictures are always square and I shoot them on real black and white film, Then, I print them myself on real black and white paper in my real black and white darkroom. Actually the darkroom itself is in color. But I digress again.

Images from Classic Film shoots are not posted on the internet. I will hand print you three or four contact sheets containing two to four dozen images. Then we'll meet, pick an image or two for me to print in the darkroom and talk about framing options.

Packages start at $250 including contact sheets.

Vintage 8x10

This is for real daredevils and folks who want more than just pictures. This is for people who want an adventurous photographic "experience."

I'll use one of a couple of vintage cameras I own that produce 8x10 inch negatives. One was made in Italy and I use it mainly in the studio. The other, which I use outdoors, is an 80-year-old wooden camera made by Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY. They're both a hoot to use and produce exceptionally beautiful pictures.

Of course, I'll hand process the negatives and prints as described above. You'll have about 12 proof prints to choose from. The final prints only come in 8x10 because I contact print them in my darkroom. For those of you who are certified adrenaline junkies, I can also print them using one of a couple of hand-coated 19th century processes. I'm familiar with. If you're interested in a Vintage 8x10 experience call or email me and we'll make an appointment for you to come to the studio and discuss the options.

All Classic 8x10 packages are custom and prices start at $400.
